Intermediate Child Counselling Skills (Level 3 Certificate)
Place2Be’s Intermediate Child Counselling Skills (Level 3 Certificate) is an opportunity to learn more about the theories and techniques used by our mental health professionals.
The course allows trainees to apply for our Postgraduate Diploma in Counselling Children in Schools and/or a Counselling Placement in a Place2Be school.

Course details
What it covers:
- learning child counselling skills, including using play, creative work and narrative
- developing counselling theory, with an emphasis on attachment theory
- observing and recording your practice for feedback and supervision
- building self-awareness and identifying any barriers you might have in communicating and being emotionally available
- applying new knowledge to home, school and peer-group relationships.
Useful for those who want to:
- develop key counselling and therapeutic play skills to support their work or everyday life with children and young people
- become a Counsellor on Placement with Place2Be
- progress to further counselling qualifications such as Place2Be’s Postgraduate Diploma in Counselling Children in Schools.
Progression
If you are looking to apply for our 2025 Postgraduate Diploma in Counselling Children in Schools, you will need to apply for a course that finishes by March 2025.
Courses that currently fit this criteria include:
- London 5 Feb 2024 –24 Jun 2024
- London 5 Mar 2024–9 Jul 2024
- London 13 Apr 2024–21 Jul 2024.
Entry requirements
To apply, you must have:
- completed Place2Be's Introduction to Child Counselling Skills (Level 2 Award) or an equivalent qualification which includes at least 43 Guided Learning Hours, theory, skills practice and evidence of self-awareness (we cannot accept online courses)
- attended a Place2Be Taster Day within 18 months of enrolling unless you have completed our Introduction to Child Counselling Skills (Level 2 Award)
- time to attend all sessions unless there are exceptional circumstances
- spent at least one year working with, caring for or parenting primary-aged children
- received counselling or psychotherapy yourself
- internet access to use our learning platform.
If you are shortlisted, we will contact you to arrange an interview.
Course fee
The fee for our Intermediate Child Counselling Skills (Level 3 Certificate) is £2,000. You can choose how to pay:
Option A) Full Course Fee of £2000
Option B) Deposit of £667, followed by two payments of £667 at one-month intervals
Payment will be required only if offered a place to study.
Funding through Place2Be's bursary
Our Level 3 Certificate bursary can cover the cost of your course fees if you’re eligible. If you’re successful in getting a bursary, we’ll ask you to pay £150 to secure your place on the course.

Accreditation
Accredited by the Counselling and Psychotherapy Central Awarding Body (CPCAB). Includes 92 Guided Learning Hours.
