Level 3 Certificate in Counselling Skills for Working with Children

15 days (once a week), 9.30am to 5.00pm

Place2Be's Level 3 Certificate allows you to develop your counselling and therapeutic play skills for working with or caring for children and young people. Successful completion of theory and practice components of the course will provide you with the skills needed to undertake a Volunteer Counsellor placement in a Place2Be school for up to 2 years.


What it covers:

  • Knowledge of counselling skills for working with children
  • Knowledge of counselling theory with an emphasis on attachment theory
  • Skills to non-judgmentally observe and record your own practice for feedback and supervision
  • Self-awareness to identify potential blocks to communication and ability to remain emotionally available to a child within the counselling relationship
  • Experience of using a variety of communication skills and media to enable children to express themselves; including play, creative art and narrative
  • Ability to apply new knowledge within the context of home, school and peer group relationships 


Useful for those who: 

  •  Wish to further develop their counselling skills for working with children and young people
  • Wish to gain the skills needed to become a Volunteer Counsellor with Place2Be for up to two years
  • Wish to go on to gain further counselling qualifications such as the Place2Be Postgraduate Diploma and Masters


Entry requirements:

  • Attendance at a Place2Be Taster Day (within 12 months of starting the Level 3 course, unless you have completed our Level 2 Award)
  • Successful completion of our Level 2 Award or an equivalent qualification
  • Level 2 or equivalent qualification must include a minimum of 43 guided learning hours, an introduction to counselling theory, evidence of self-awareness through a reflective journal or group process and counselling skills practice
  • One or more years working with, caring for or parenting primary-aged children
  • Using play and/or creativity to increase your self awareness
  • Counselling or psychotherapy for yourself 


  • The Level 3 Certificate is accredited by the Counselling and Psychotherapy Central Awarding Body (CPCAB). You will receive a total of 85 guided learning hours upon completion - this equates to 14 credits at Level 3.

Becoming a Place2Be Volunteer Counsellor
Those who successfully complete the theory and practice aspects of the Level 3 Certificate are able to apply for supervised training placement as a Volunteer Counsellor in a Place2Be school for up to 2 years.

This gives you a chance to gain meaningful experience of working with children and young people, and is an incredibly rewarding experience. 1. Before applying for the Level 3 Certificate, you need to attend a Place2Be Taster Day (within 12 months of starting the Level 3 course, unless you have completed our Level 2 Award)

2. Download and complete an application form

3. To submit your application, email your submission to qualify@place2be.org.uk or select your course in the box above right, complete the booking form and upload your application form.

4. If you are shortlisted, we will contact you to arrange an interview.

Offers are made on an ongoing basis. If you are successful at interview and spaces on your preferred cohort are full, we will offer you a space on a later course.
