This conference will explore best practice in delivering an effective whole-school approach to mental health, with deep and lasting impact across the school community.

  • Exploring the pre-launch findings from Pro Bono Economics’ research on the relationship between improved mental health in childhood, with later life outcomes (GCSE attainment) - and the cost benefit of these.
  • Can investing in early mental health, particularly for those from disadvantaged backgrounds, prevent the widening of inequalities in adulthood?
  • What do we know about the relationship between child and parental mental health; and the cost implications to society?
  • What are some of the socio-economic benefits of investment in early intervention?

The session will bring together Place2Be practitioners, school and sector leaders to consider the link between safety, wellbeing, belonging and educational outcomes:  

  • What can you tell us about the underlying intersection between mental health, behaviour and conduct -particularly for young boys.
  • What can happen when the right support is not in place – or is not provided early enough?
  • How this affects a child’s experience in school, work and their life outcomes?
  • How – to truly focus on prevention – should we reach most vulnerable young people (incl. SEND / ACEs / Poverty) earlier with effective interventions?
  • What do these interventions look like e.g. Parenting programmes; effective mental health support, teacher training and youth services? 
  • The benefits of doing this, on an individual, community and national scale.

The session will share insights from colleagues in Wandsworth who are creating an approach to children’s mental health that embraces collaboration. Experts will discuss:

  • How commissioners have seen the benefits of working with education and voluntary sector experts.
  • The practical implementation of collaboration, and how partners have achieved this.
  • The impact on the community of young people, families, education and health.
  • How combined resources have transformed delivery.
  • Learnings from the programme.
