Place2Be conference unites sector leaders around a mission to improve children’s mental health

Hosted by partners at UBS, Place2Be presented an important conference earlier this week to bring together school leaders, commissioners, funders and mental health experts.

The event, “Let’s Move From Treatment to Prevention: Schools at the heart of effective community-based mental health delivery”, identified how our sector can work together to ensure every child can easily access the right support in school.

Across several sessions, panellists shared their insight and expertise. Topics included:

  • how we create a system that delivers effective mental health intervention and prevention
  • the long-term benefits of investing in mental health support
  • how the right support in a child’s life can enable them to thrive
  • communities who collaborate to build a place-based approach.
There are many children who are experiencing extreme mental health issues. How are we expecting these children to function, to learn, to contribute to society if they are carrying such levels of mental health issues. If we are not investing in the mental health of our children, then it is for nothing. Headteacher, London
Really powerful panellists and a good mix of attendees, judging by the questions that were asked. Audience member who attended the conference

In recent weeks, the Government has pledged to roll-out Mental Health Support Teams to every school and college in England. They have also published the 10 Year Health Plan, committing to extending neighbourhood health centres and hubs to tackle mental health in the community.

With the Government’s mission to break down barriers to opportunity and help children to achieve and thrive, this timely event considered how schools, NHS and third sector organisations like Place2Be can help to deliver this.

I am feeling hopeful around this conference especially to have health and local authority partners in the room alongside our education and school leaders. The hope is that we can achieve a joined-up approach to provide effective mental health support, with an emphasis on prevention, for all our children and young people and enable them to truly thrive. There was a real sense of energy about bringing systems together with children and young people absolutely at the centre. With this collective will, we have a real opportunity together to make this happen. Catherine Roche, Chief Executive of Place2Be

Speakers discussed the important role of schools in reaching more young people, not only to provide support that reduces mental health difficulties, but also in boosting children’s overall wellbeing. This prevents mental health issues, giving children the coping skills to thrive.

Amazing morning talking about strategic leadership and prevalent issues that leaders face in schools and across the NHS. In addition, the importance of cultural engagement with parents and how to support their children in the long run. Nadirah Khan, Assistant Head, Stratford School Academy
Fantastic to hear the data, research and real live stories of what is happening in schools around the country and local authorities and charities and investment in children’s mental health in order to be able tosupport children to thrive in their future. David Huntingford, Headteacher, William Ford Primary

At the event, we heard exclusive new data from Pro Bono Economics, that showed this approach improves children’s GCSE scores, which can have lifelong benefits.

Our report provides the economic benefits to add to the overall moral and social case for support for children’s mental health to close this gap between need and support. Rachel Gomez, Pro Bono Economics
