If climbing Mount Kilimanjaro is on your bucket list, join us on this 10-day challenge and help to improve mental health for thousands of school children.

Kilimanjaro's snow-capped summit looms high over the African plains. You'll pass through forest, moorland and scree to Uhuru Peak, the highest point. You'll follow the Machame route which gradually acclimatises you to the altitude, giving you an excellent chance of success.

What are the dates for Trek Kilimanjaro?

Trek Kilimanjaro takes place over 10 days. There are multiple 10-day trips available:

What's the itinerary?

Day 1: Depart London

Day 2: Arrive in Moshi

  1. Arrive at Kilimanjaro International Airport and get a transfer to Moshi.
  2. Have a bit of time to explore, check-in and settle in.

Day 3: Machame Gate to Machame Camp

  1. Drive one hour from Moshie to Machame Gate - here, you'll meet you crew of porters.
  2. Start the climb! You'll mostly be going through dense rainforest.
  3. Night camp: Machame Camp

    Trek approximately 18km (5-7 hours)

Day 4: Machame Camp to Shira Caves

  1. Continue through the rainforest until you reach Shira Plateau.
  2. Night camp: Shira Caves

    Trek approximately 9km (4-5 hours)

Day 5: Shira Caves to Barranco Hut

  1. You'll walk on moorland, traversing the southwest side of Kilimanjaro.
  2. You'll reach camp at the Barranco Hut.

    Trek appoximately 15km (8-10 hours)

Day 6: Barranco Hut to Barafu Camp

  1. You'll descend into a big ravine, called the Great Barranco, before exiting steeply up the Great Barranco Wall.
  2. Next, you'll walk towards the Karanga Valley and continue until the camp: Barafu Camp.

    Trek approximately 18km (7-9km)

Day 7: Barafu Camp to the summit, and down to Millennium Camp

  1. It'll be an early start to make sure you avoid walking for too long at the hottest part of the day.
  2. The views are incredible as you head to the summit glaciers and on to the crater.
  3. You'll reach the summit, Uhuru Peak (5,895m)!
  4. The descent takes you back to Barafu Camp and on further to Millennium Camp.

    Trek approximately 20km (10-12 hours)

Day 8: Millennium Camp to Mweka Gate to Moshi

  1. You'll have a gentle trek through the rainforest to Mweka Gate, where the trek ends.
  2. Vehicles will meet you here to take you back to your hotel, before having a well deserved celebration!

    Trek approximately 10km (5 hours)

Day 9: Free time in Moshi, and fly to London

Day 10: Arrive back in London

Does Trek Kilimanjaro have a guide?

Yes, you'll have an experienced mountain leader from Discover Adventure guiding you and the rest of your group on your trek to Kilimanjaro. They are fully trained in first-aid, have a wealth of knowledge and experience and are super friendly to make you feel comfortable.

There will also be local guides, cooks and porters to help you and your group complete your trek!

Do I need to bring my own food and drink?

Plenty of food and drink is provided - any exceptions are listed on the Discover Adventure website's itinerary. These are typically on travel days or days where you've got free time.

What are the travel requirements

You'll need to have a valid passport and a visa. Discover Adventure will provide you with any information you need to help your application.

You'll also need to check whether you need any vaccinations.

How long does Trek Kilimanjaro take?

The whole trek is 10 days, including your travel to and from the UK. You'll have 6 days of walking, each with varying distances.

How fit do I have to be to complete Trek Kilimanjaro?

Trek Kilimanjaro is designed to be a challenge. Once you sign up, Discover Adventure will provide you with a training guide that will help you prepare safely. If you're at all concerned about your fitness levels or have a question for the Discover Adventure team, you can contact them for a confidential chat.

What clothes do I need to wear and what kit do I need to bring?

It's important you're prepared for all weather conditions because bad weather can start at any time.
