Grand Départ of the 114th Tour de France comes to the UK for the first time since 2014!

Join Team Place2Be on this rare challenge, cycling the route of a Tour de France stage – one of the biggest and most gruelling sporting events in the world! Soak up the atmosphere building up in the towns and villages as you ride from Edinburgh to Carlisle, taking in beautiful rolling landscapes and unforgettable views along the way.

What's the itinerary?

Day 1: Arrival (Edinburgh)

Meet for registration at your accommodation, a few miles east of Edinburgh city centre. Allow time to prep your bike and kit, so you’re all set up for tomorrow’s big day. Mechanics will be on hand to help if you need it. After a thorough trip briefing and dinner, you’re free to rest. Night accommodation is provided.

Day 2: Ride Stage One - Edinburgh to Carlisle

The big day, cycling the route of the 2027 Tour de France, Stage One, Scotland to England! You'll ride directly from your accommodation onto the route, heading south through Midlothian and the Scottish Borders before ending your trip in Carlisle. You'll then head back to your accommodation, where you'll enjoy a big celebratory evening! Second night accommodation is provided.

Cycle approx. 120 miles; Total Ascent approx. 7100ft

Day 3: Depart

After breakfast, you’re free to head out onto the route and cheer on the pros!

Why should I run for Place2Be?

By joining Team Place2Be, you’ll be raising money to help ensure that no child has to face mental health problems alone. 

Every penny and pound your raise for your Grand Départ challenge will fund:

  • mental health support in schools for pupils

  • vital mental health training and resources for staff, parents and families

  • our work increasing the number of mental health professionals who can become a qualified counsellor with Place2Be.

FAQs
Does The Grand Départ have a dedicated team?

Yes, your trip will be led by experienced Discover Adventure leaders and support crew, including mechanics and at least one medic.

What food is included?

Meals are provided from dinner on day 1 to breakfast on day 3. Breakfasts and dinners will be provided at your accommodation. Expect uncomplicated meals, but plenty of tasty, energising food!

Being vegetarian, vegan, or having other dietary requirements or religious dietary restrictions is rarely a problem provided you inform Discover Adventure well in advance so they can accommodate your needs.

Is my travel to and from Edinburgh provided?

No, you'll have to make your own way to and from your accommodation in Edinburgh where you'll meet your group and the tour leaders.

How fit do I have to be to complete The Grant Départ?

The Grand Départ is designed to be a challenge, and it is vital that you train sufficiently for it. Discover Adventure will supply you with a thorough training guide once you have registered. They expect all participants to train hard in advance, but they respect everyone’s limits and will not expect everyone to maintain the same pace.

What clothes do I need to wear and what kit do I need to bring?

It's important you're prepared for all weather conditions because bad weather can start at any time.

Once you sign up, our event partner Discover Adventure will give you a list of everything you'll need to bring, as well as lots of helpful information!

Plus, you will have your exclusive Place2Be cycling top, that you can rock proudly during your challenge!
