Entry requirements
To be eligible for a place on the Level 5 Certificate, we ask that you:
- have completed (minimum 6 months post qualification by the time of the application) an adult counselling qualification, which must have included guided learning, theory, skills practice and evidence of self-awareness - unfortunately, we cannot accept online courses
- are able to attend all sessions unless there are exceptional circumstances and complete all required learning (readings, research)
- have the capacity to attend one day a week at a placement for the duration of the course (a minimum of 50 hours must be completed), either within a Place2Be placement or your own. If you are providing your own placement, please read through the application process (Route 3) to understand the placement requirements
- have internet access and basic IT literacy skills, confidence in using word processing software and the ability to navigate our e-learning platform and attend our online workshops
- personal therapy is not mandatory for students, but we strongly encourage them to monitor their own needs and seek support if required.
Before applying, and if you are applying through a Place2be placement, please check that there's a school on our map that is convenient for you to commute to for your placement. While we do our best to arrange a placement close to you, this cannot be guaranteed. If there isn’t a school nearby convenient for you to commute to once a week, this course may not be the right fit at this time. Please also note that not all schools on the map will have placements available.
Application process
Applications for our Autumn 2026/2027 Intake, running in London and Manchester, are now open. We operate on a rolling application basis and will close applications once the course is full, so we encourage early submission. If you’re not quite ready to apply yet, register your interest in our course to be kept up-to-date about the next course opening.
There are three different application routes for our Child Counselling Skills for Adult Counsellors (Level 5 Certificate). Which route you take will depend on whether you are:
- Route 1 – Place2Be staff & current Counsellor on Placement with Place2Be
- Route 2 – an external candidate in need of a placement with Place2be
- Route 3 – an external candidate with an existing external placement
Route 1 - Place2Be Staff & Current Counsellors on Placement
If you are following this route, your application process will be as follows:
1. Attend a compulsory webinar
While you do not need to attend the webinar before submitting your application, you must have attended it by the time we review applications. If you haven’t attended, your application will not be considered by the panel.
2. Submit an application to our Level 5 counselling
3. Submit your references
Please note that you are required to submit one reference as part of your application. All references must be submitted online via the reference request form.
-
If you are a paid staff member at Place2Be, you must submit one reference from your Place2Be line manager or School Project Manager.
-
If you are already on placement with Place2Be, you do not need to submit a new reference unless you have been on placement for more than two years. In that case, you must provide a new reference from your Place2Be line manager via the reference form.
4. Once you've applied, we may invite you for an informal discussion if necessary.
5.. If you are successful, you will be offered a place on the programme.
Please note that your application will not be processed until all required elements are completed. This includes your Level 5 course application, attendance at the webinar, and your references. Once all components have been received, we will begin reviewing your application.
Placements Information
If you are already a Place2Be Counsellor on Placement, please use your current placement to support you throughout your Level 5 counselling course. Please note, you must remain on placement for the duration of the course (minimum 50 hours required). Any hours that you have completed prior to the course starting cannot be counted as part of your course hours. If you have not completed the required hours in due time, you may be required to remain on placement until you have completed all your course hours.
If you are a Place2Be Clinical Staff member in School, please use your role to support you throughout your Level 5 Certificate. Please note, you must complete a minimum of 50 hours of one-to-one work with clients while on the course. Any hours that you have done previously cannot be counted as part of your hours for the course.
Route 2 – an external candidate who will need a Placement with Place2Be during the course
3. Submit an application to become a Counsellor on Placement
We will not be able to process your Level 5 Course Application if you have not completed the Counsellor on Placement form.
4. Our internal panel will assess your application. If you meet all the course and Counsellor on Placement requirements, you'll be offered an interview.
5. If you are successful, you will be offered a place on the programme.
6. Once you accept your place, our Placements Team will be in touch to organise your placement in a Place2Be partner school.
Placements Information
- Fill out the Counsellor on Placement application form
- You will be able to let the tutors know of any placement requirements during your interview (e.g., days of the week, general school location).
- Once your school placement has been assigned, we will be unable to make changes unless there are exceptional circumstances. Failure to accept your placement will result in your course offer being withdrawn.
- Once you have been assigned a school placement, you must complete the onboarding process with the Placement Team. This can take up to 6-8 weeks and will include 3 days of induction training, an Experian Background (DBS) check and Right to Work check. You cannot start in your school placement without completing these onboarding tasks.
- Please note, you must remain on placement for the duration of the course (minimum 50 hours required). If you have not completed your hours in due time, you may be required to remain on placement until you have completed all your hours. · To see what placement options might be near you, you can see all our Place2Be partner schools on a map. Please also note that not all schools on the map will have placements available. If you are unable to see any placement nearby that you can reasonably commute to once a week, this course may not be the right fit at this time.
Route 3 – an external candidate with an existing external placement
If you are following this route, your application process will be as follows:
1. Attend a compulsory webinar
While you do not need to attend the webinar before submitting your application, you must have attended it by the time we review applications. If you haven’t attended, your application will not be considered by the panel.
2. Submit an application to our Level 5 counselling
Please note that you are required to submit two references as part of your application. All references must be submitted online via the reference request form. The two references you need to provide are:
- One reference from your placement setting
- One clinical or academic reference (e.g. your course tutor or supervisor)
Note: If your reference from the placement setting is provided by a Clinical Supervisor, your second reference may be a character reference. Neither reference can be a family relative.
Please note that your application will not be processed until all required elements are completed. This includes your Level 5 course application, attendance at the webinar, and your references. Once all components have been received, we will begin reviewing your application.
4. Our internal panel will assess your application. If you meet all the course requirements, you'll be offered an interview.
5. If you are successful, and following confirmation from your placement setting, you will be offered a place on the programme.
Placements Information
Please read before applying: if your current placement does not meet all of the requirements listed below, you will need to apply for a placement with Place2Be as part of your application.
- Your placement must be within an organisational setting where you are actively providing one-to-one therapeutic support to children and young people aged 5 to 18 years.
- Your placement must be established for a minimum of 6 weeks prior to submitting your application.
- Your placement must allow you to remain in role for at least three academic terms (or equivalent) to meet the CPCAB requirement of 50 clinical hours.
- Your placement setting holds primary responsibility for safeguarding while on placement. However, should a safeguarding issue arise during the course, Place2Be will take responsibility for ensuring that appropriate actions are taken to address the matter.
- Your placement must not involve private practice.
- If you are employed as a counsellor within an organisation, you must provide evidence that you have access to regular clinical supervision. If your placement is on a voluntary basis, you must have access to on-site clinical supervision. Supervision must meet BACP standards of at least 1.5 hours per month.
Application questions
Whether you're an internal or external candidate, we require you to answer the following questions as part of your application. We recommend preparing your answers on a separate document in advance and pasting them into the application form once ready. Each question has a 1,500-character limit (between 215 and 375 words with spaces included).
- Question 1: Why do you wish to work with children in a therapeutic setting, and what qualities do you feel you (can) bring to this work?
- Question 2: Describe a time in which you experienced an ethical dilemma or difficulty in a therapeutic relationship either in adult or children and young people work. What issues arose? How were these managed?
- Question 3: How do you think a school counsellor can work in the wider school setting to support a child alongside one-to-one?
