School Readiness How Can I Prepare Myself

How can I prepare myself?

Starting secondary or high school can be a big step for everyone and it’s completely normal to feel worried or unsure about it - so don't forget to look after yourself too!

Trying to find time for yourself isn't always easy when you’re a busy parent or carer, but it can be really important.

What things do you really enjoy? What do you find relaxing?

What keeps you feeling fit and well, both emotionally and physically?

It might be trying to get enough rest and sleep, eating well, being outside in the fresh air, or doing some exercise.

Or it could be meeting up with a friend or talking to them on the phone, listening to music, cooking, watching your favourite TV show, or walking the dog.

The important thing is to try and find some time to do the things that work for you.

You may well know other parents and carers who are taking this step with their children. Don’t be afraid to meet up with them and chat about what you’re unsure about or struggling with.

Remember, although your child may become more independent as they grow up, you are still their first and most important teacher and they will continue to rely on your help and support throughout secondary or high school and beyond.

By remembering to look after yourself, you will be better able to support your child’s needs too.
