Mental Health Champions - School Leader

Supporting School Leaders to bring about strategic change to create 'mentally healthy' schools


Place2Be's 'Mental Health Champions' Programme draws on over 20 years' direct experience of working in schools to support School Leadership Teams to take steps towards becoming 'mentally healthy' school communities.

Through a series of training workshops and consultation sessions, participants will:

  • Build their capability, confidence, and capacity to understand and respond to the mental health needs within their school community
  • Undertake a school-based audit of existing activity relating to mental health and emotional wellbeing 
  • Identify priority areas for improvement and formulate a plan for achieving this 
  • Develop effective communications with statutory CAMHS and lead on making effective referrals
  • Consider ways that wider staff teams can be empowered to advocate for children's mental health

Programme details:


Two senior leaders from each school (or one SLT member and one pastoral, inclusion, SEND lead)


  • School - Develop a strategic approach across the whole school, build a framework for a systemic approach to positive mental health
  • Individual - Develop leadership skills for driving through change, grow understanding of how to apply child development theories in-school


  • Send two senior leaders to a local programme
  • Commit to releasing participants for the training

Multi-Academy Trusts/ Teaching School Alliances / Local Federations:

  • Provide a central programme for two senior leaders from up to 8 of their schools

Workshops (full-day unless stated):

  • Child development & Leading mental health strategy
  • Engaging with stakeholders & Attachment in the school
  • Delivering and embedding strategy
  • Sharing outcomes and Multi-agency work (half-day)


Two sixty minute consultations:

  • Opportunity to review specific goals
  • Provide framework for developing an action plan
