Masters Counselling Children in Schools

One year (part-time)

Place2Be's Masters is an exciting opportunity for practising counsellors to produce academic knowledge about an area of research that they find interesting, thereby enriching our knowledge of counselling for the benefit of the children and young people that we work with.

For those who have already completed Place2Be's Postgraduate Diploma, the Masters forms an additional third year.

Those who have not completed the Place2Be Postgraduate Diploma but have been working or volunteering for Place2Be for 2 years or more are also welcome to apply and enter this module via Accredited Prior Learning.

The course involves 6-8 study seminars followed by regular support seminars and monthly case discussions.

What it covers: 

  • The process of developing a research proposal
  • Data collection
  • Data analysis, thematic analysis, grounded theory, and discourse analysis
  • Ethics
  • Literature review
  • Evaluation and application of findings
  • The issue of reflexivity

 

Useful for those who:

  • Wish to shed light on under-researched areas that enrich our knowledge of counselling, helping our clients and improving the services we offer

 

Course structure:

  • Year-long research project and written dissertation (approx. 14,000 words)
  • 38 hours of tutor contact time, 12 hours supervision

Entry requirements:

 CANDIDATE  REQUIREMENTS
 Has already completed  Place2Be's Postgraduate
 Diploma in Counselling
 (120 Credits at Level 7)
 Automatically eligible to enroll
 Has another Postgraduate  Diploma
 (120 Credits at Level 7)*

 1. At least 2 years' experience of counselling in a
 Place2Be school setting and a minimum of 200 hours
 of supervised clinical work, of which at least 100 must
 be with children.

 2. Submit a 1,000 word academic position statement
 outlining their integrative counselling philosohphy  and style and how they arrived at it

 3. Deliver a presentation at interview about evidence-
 based practice and the difference between quantitative
 and qualitative research methods

 Level 4, 5 or 6 Diploma in  Counselling*

 In addition to (1-3) above:

 4. submit a 4,000 word case study

 5. submit a 3,000 word essay about working in the  school system

*NB there is a charge for applications via these routes

Accreditation:

  • Place2Be's Postgraduate Diploma in Counselling Children in Schools is accredited by the British Association of Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP). Successful completion of Place2Be's Postgraduate Diploma and Masters leads to the awards of Postgraduate Diploma Counselling Children in Schools and Masters Counselling Children in Schools by the University of East London.
