We are excited to announce the arrival of a new Level 5 Certificate in Counselling Children & Young People in Schools

Place2Be's Level 5 Certificate is open to students who have successfully completed Place2Be's Level 4 Certificate. The Level 5 Certificate is an opportunity to build your skills, knowledge and experience in a second year on placement. The Level 4 focused on your skills as a counsellor and supervisee, the Level 5 will give you the opportunity to shadow your School Project Manager and learn about the wider perspective of supporting children’s mental health in the school setting. Workshops include Assessing and Formulating, Working with Parents, Supervision and Multi-Agency work.

You must have passed your Level 4 Certificate with Place2Be and be on placement as a Counsellor in a Place2Be partner school for the entirety of the Level 5 Certificate.

What it covers:

The Level 5 Certificate will enable learners to:

  • Develop the skills and knowledge necessary to work safely and ethically as a CYP counsellor in institutional settings
  • Build knowledge and experience as CYP counsellors in institutional settings
  • Shadow a more experienced colleague in the school setting
  • Observe a range of activities associated with a school counsellor/supervisor role
  • Gain additional experience as a CYP counsellor
  • Learn about child and adolescent development theory and apply this knowledge to their clinical work in a school setting
  • Learn about systemic theory and apply this knowledge to their clinical work in a school setting
  • Demonstrate their learning through a range of written work and practice reports

Useful for: 

Place2Be Level 4 Certificate graduates who wish to consolidate their learning through an additional year on placement and by deepening and expanding their understanding and skills in supporting children's mental health from a systemic perspective. 


Entry requirements:

  • You must have passed your Level 4 Certificate with Place2Be and be on placement as a Volunteer Counsellor for the entirety of the Level 5 Certificate. Click here if you need to reapply for a Volunteer Counsellor placement. 
  • You must be on placement with Place2Be for the duration of the course 
  • Received counselling or psychotherapy yourself
  • Willingness to be playful and creative
  • Willingness to be self-reflective and having a commitment to self-development
  • Effective listening skills
  • Appropriate personal qualities of warmth, genuineness and empathy
  • Willingness to work in a group

 

Assessment:

Students should be prepared for substantial reading and written work outside of contact hours.

Essay 1: Case Study - 2500 words

Essay 2: Working as a Counsellor in the School System - 2500 words

Essay 3: Case Review - 3000 words

Students will also be assessed on Reading Assignments, a Placement Review and Placement Activities Checklist. Students are required to keep a reflective journal throughout the course. 

Accreditation:

  • The Level 5 is accredited and awarded by CPCAB (the Counselling and Psychotherapy Central Awarding Body).

Through generous sponsorship, the Level 5 Certificate is offered currently at £330* (this includes your CPCAB registration fee).

How to apply 

1. Before applying for the Level 5 Certificate, you need to have a confirmed Counsellor Placement with Place2Be (if you have left your placement since finishing the Level 4 Certificate you will need to reapply for a placement)

2. Once you have been allocated a Counsellor Placement in a Place2Be school, please download and complete the Level 5 Certificate application form:

 

3. To submit your application select the course you wish to apply for in the box at the top right of this page, complete the booking form and upload your application form.
