Place2Be’s ‘Mental Health Champions - Class Teacher’ programme receives CPD endorsement

The Counselling and Psychotherapy Central Awarding Body (CPCAB), has endorsed Place2Be’s flagship ‘Mental Health Champions - Class Teacher’ Programme (formerly known as the Talented Teacher Programme).

CPCAB, a specialist awarding organisation recognised by Ofqual (Office of the Qualifications and Examinations Regulator), has recently introduced a Continuing Professional Development (CPD) endorsement scheme, which seeks to offer recognition and quality assurance for counselling- informed CPD programmes.

Place2Be’s ‘Mental Health Champions - Class Teacher’ programme is a unique and independently evaluated programme to develop the knowledge and skills of teachers, proven to increase confidence and job satisfaction. The programme takes place over two terms, is suitable for both primary and secondary teachers and consists of a broad range of training workshops and personalised consultation sessions to help raise awareness and develop a mentally healthy classroom.

Teachers who complete the programme will now receive a CPD certificate and can be confident that the quality of the training has been externally validated.

Dr Patrick Johnston, Director of Learning & Practice at Place2Be commented:

“Our experience of working in schools has taught us that children’s emotional wellbeing and resilience directly impacts on their ability to learn and concentrate in class. Teachers should not be expected to become mental health experts, but with at least three children in every classroom facing a diagnosable mental health issue, an awareness of child mental health along with practical strategies that can be used in the classroom can be hugely beneficial. This programme is proven to increase teachers’ ability and confidence when identifying and supporting pupils with mental health needs.”

The endorsement follows an independent evaluation of the programme in 2016 by NatCen, which found that it was effective in improving the knowledge, ability and confidence of new teachers.
