Weather: Noticing Feelings

Weather: Noticing Feelings

Support children to understand and express their feelings through this weather-themed art project from Place2Be's Art Room team.

About the project

We all experience the weather, but it means something different to each of us. The two activities in this art project aim to:

  • encourage children to use weather to represent their emotional states
  • notice how their feelings change, just like the weather does.

We have designed these art activities for school children aged 6–11. But do feel free to try them with children of other ages if you think they would help them. Alternatively, take a look at our other Art Room activities to find even more wellbeing ideas for schools and at home.

Wellbeing activities overview

Below, we've summarised each wellbeing activity included in the Weather: Noticing feelings project pack. These creative activities involve children using creative ways to express how they might be feeling. Children will also explore complex mixed emotions and how feelings can change over time.

Activity 1: Weather watch

We've designed the first activity to help children creatively identify and share their feelings using weather. Children will create an emotions wheel using types of weather to represent different feelings. The activity requires simple materials, including a paper plate and something to draw with, such as pens or coloured pencils.

Activity 2: Window to my weather

The second creative activity is about understanding that we can feel lots of emotions at once. It also helps them explore how feelings can evolve over time. Children will create a window representing the feelings inside them using different types of weather. The activity involves simple materials, including something to draw with, something to draw on and collage materials, if available.
